"ANYONE BUT YOU" - REVIEW

(Originally published April 24th, 2024)

Happy 460th (possibly belated) birthday, William Shakespeare! Hope you’re glad we’re still performing, adapting, and outright stealing from your deep well of words, wit and wisdom!

ANYONE BUT YOU was the last movie we saw in theaters in 2023, and it’s a sexy, sunny, funny blast. Featuring two megawatt movie star performances from Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, a snappy pace as directed by EASY A director Will Gluck, beautiful Australian locales, a strong bench of supporting characters (nice to see Bryan Brown pop up here— I wonder if anyone else thinks of him as the Australian Michael Caine?), and even a credits sequence sing-along to a certain song (that I won’t spoil here) that has been in my head at least once a week since I’ve seen it, there’s a good time to be had.

Leave your cynicism at the door and release your inhibitions: If you need a spirit-lifter, and if it’s an unabashedly self-aware (and completely beat-by-best predictable) feel-good 90s romcom version of a Shakespeare play that you seek, ANYONE BUT YOU is now on Netflix.

Also recommending: another Netflix throwback romcom starring Glen Powell from a few years ago called SET IT UP (which also stars Zoey Deutch, Lucy Liu, and Taye Diggs).
