"SASQUATCH SUNSET" - REVIEW

(Originally published on April 22, 2024)

This is the CITIZEN KANE of slice-of-life Sasquatch dramedies. A truly wondrous and bewildering experience that, at 90 minutes, doesn’t overstay its welcome, but packs it with heart, suspense, tragedy, and lots and lots of scatalogical humor… and all without a single line of dialogue. The quartet that makes up the cast (including Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg) brings unique, specific personalities and their incredibly expressive eyes to each of their hirsute characters, and the story they spin with the Zellner Brothers’ unfussy direction (aided by a resonant score by The Octopus Project) is magical. Lastly, the film is mischievous yet somehow innocently hilarious. It may not be for every taste (and it is rated R, so don’t bring your children), but if you can get on this absurd and beautiful film’s wavelength, you’ll have a good time.
