"UNFROSTED" - Review

Thoughts on UNFROSTED.

Jerry Seinfeld brings his lifelong fascination with breakfast confections to its logical conclusion as he stars, directs and co-writes this large scale, extremely silly, always absurd, occasionally hilarious and (as Seinfeld’s narrative long-form track record suggests) ultimately uneven film.

This mostly delightful diversion reminded me a bit of Joel and Ethan Coen’s THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, another Americana-infused speculation on the creation of the “dingus” (curiously, that word is used for both HUDSUCKER’s Hula Hoop and UNFROSTED’s Pop Tart), and when the film keeps things in that silly, nostalgic spirit, it works. It works less well in the finale, where it starts to get soggy with spoofs on touchy current events. That said, it's been a long time since we've had an outright silly movie, and I laughed more than I didn't. The movie is bright and colorful, and the cast is outstanding. I was always surprised and delighted whenever a new face would show up, whether as a supporting role or a cameo, and for me, Jim Gaffigan was the standout. I'd watch it again just to watch him.

Not as good as SEINFELD (what is?), but still a whole heck of a lot more entertaining than BEE MOVIE. In other words, it's the cinematic equivalent of your grocery store cereal aisle, and because it’s on Netflix, it can be consumed and digested almost as quickly.
